Yoneda, Hiromi Mizunaga : Effects of gap size on decay rates of leaf litter in three
primeval evergreen broadleaved forests in Japan and Peninsular Malaysia.
Japanese Journal of Forest Environment 55:17-25, 2013.
We examined effects of gap size on decay rates of leaf litter from
litterbag experiment at a tropical rain forest in Pasoh Forest Reserve,
Malaysia, and a subtropical forest at Tokunoshima island in Kagoshima, Japan,
and a warm-temperate forest at Aya in Miyazaki, Japan. Freshly fallen leaves
of five tree species in Pasoh and leaf litters of two dominant species in
Tokunoshima and Aya were used for litterbag experiment. Four forest gap size
classes that comprise a gap size gradient were chosen in Pasoh and Aya: (1)
closed canopy (0m2); (2) small gap (< 20m2); (3)
intermediate gap (30〜70m2); (4) large
gap (> 90m2). Three gap size classes (lack of small gap) were
chosen in Tokunoshima. Decay rates were evaluated using 2.0 mm mesh litterbags
as a rule, at all study sites. However, at Pasoh, 0.5 mm mesh litterbags
excluding meso-and macro-soil fauna were also used. Results from the experiment
suggest that effects of gap size on decay rates of leaf litter differ among
forest types. The decay rate was slower in the large gap (> 90m2)
at Tokunoshima only. On the other hand, in experiments in 0.5 mm mesh litter
bag at Paso, the decay rate was slower in the large gap (> 90m2)
and intermediate gap (30〜70m2). The reason
for the different results, we considered that decay process by meso-and
macro-soil fauna such as higher termite at Pasoh is not affected negatively by
gap size. Our results suggest that effects of gap size on leaf litter differ
among forest types and that impact of decomposer differ among types of them.
